Week 7 of SUSTAIN: Group Project Progress and Lecture

Today's topic of lecture is Challenges To Sustainable Development that was held online on zoom

But before we started, each group was to present their group project's progress

My Group Project ~ Watt's Next, Energy-Saving Awareness Campaign

In Mahallah Ali, Mahallah Siddiq, Mahallah Faruq, and the Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences at IIUM Gombak, observations reveal that energy is frequently spent due to inefficient behaviors such as leaving appliances on and wasteful lighting. It's possible that many employees and students are ignorant of the expenses and effects that excessive energy use has on the environment. We can minimize electricity costs, create sustainable habits that last a lifetime, and reduce the campus's carbon footprint by raising awareness and promoting energy-saving practices.

Now moving on today's topic of lecture,

Here is key points that needs to be focused on:

Key Challenges to Sustainable Development

  • Social Challenges:

    • Inequalities in access to education, healthcare, food, and clean water.

    • Over 750 million people lack access to clean drinking water.

    • Approximately 805 million people face food insecurity.

  • Economic Challenges:

    • Over 1.3 billion people live in extreme poverty, earning less than USD 1.25 a day.

    • Nearly half of the global population lives on less than USD 2.50 a day, highlighting economic divides.

  • Environmental Challenges:

    • Resource exploitation leading to biodiversity loss.

    • About 1.5 billion people lack access to electricity, limiting opportunities for education and work.

Broader Implications

  • The need for global policy reform to prioritize human welfare over agricultural subsidies.

  • Urgent challenges require coordinated efforts from governments, NGOs, and international organizations.

  • Emphasizes the importance of sustainable and inclusive development strategies to address fundamental issues like poverty and inequality.

Conclusion

  • The course aims to equip students with the knowledge to understand and address the interconnected challenges of sustainable development, emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach.
