During week 4, class is as usual at KENMS but today we learnt something new and that is International Framework of Sustainable Development

Here is the key point of this week's lecture:

  1. Key Conventions and Declarations

    • 1972 Stockholm Conference: Focused on global environmental cooperation and established UNEP.
    • 1987 Brundtland Report: Defined sustainable development and emphasized intergenerational equity.
    • 1992 Rio Earth Summit: Produced Agenda 21, UNFCCC, and Convention on Biological Diversity.
    • 1997 Kyoto Protocol: Introduced greenhouse gas emission reduction targets and emission trading.
    • 2000 Millennium Development Goals: Set global targets for development and poverty eradication.
    • 2016 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Broadened focus to include social, economic, and environmental dimensions.
  2. Key Outcomes

    • Regular conferences (COPs) for climate action and global cooperation.
    • Emphasis on shared but differentiated responsibilities.
    • Developed and developing nations aligning through financial and technological assistance.

Sejahtera: Local Implementation of Sustainable Development

  1. Definition

    • A holistic concept rooted in Malay culture and Islamic principles, focusing on peace, prosperity, and well-being.
    • Encompasses spiritual, emotional, and physical harmony within society.
  2. Core Elements

    • Tawhid (Oneness of God): Guides relationships with Allah, humans, and the environment.
    • Holistic Well-being: Aligns with the Islamic worldview of achieving happiness (Al-Falah) in this life and the Hereafter.
    • Education: Aims to produce balanced individuals intellectually, spiritually, and ethically.
  3. Implementation

    • Prioritizes values such as harmony, sustainability, and collective welfare.
    • Promotes leadership and education as tools for nurturing responsible citizens aligned with Sejahtera principles.

This integration of global frameworks and local philosophies highlights the interplay between universal goals and culturally tailored approaches to achieving sustainable development.
