Week 3 of SUSTAIN: Maqasid Shariah and SD

Welcome to the third week of Sustain Your Lyfe with SCSH1201!!

To start off this blog, I should mention that there is no lecture class today BUT but it replaced by a fun activity where in a group of 5 people, we need to take at least three exciting photos and our photo group in the IIUM Gallery, then write three exciting observations we can relate to Maqasid Shariah and sustainable development.

This is my group that consists of Hakimi, Sholihin, Zulfahmi and also me, Zafran

Here are our three exciting observations!!

First observation

The Maqasid al-Shariah for this project is to safeguard human life and dignity. Providing assistance to asnaf ensures that their basic needs, such as food, shelter, and healthcare, are met. This aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 1: No Poverty, and SDG 2: Zero Hunger. By helping asnaf access these essentials, we promote their physical and mental well-being, supporting their ability to lead dignified lives.

Second observation

In Maqasid al-Shariah, the preservation of life extends beyond humans to all living creatures, as animals are part of God's creation (khalq). Protecting endangered species aligns with the responsibility to preserve life in all its forms. This mirrors Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15: Life on Land, which aims to protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, including the preservation of biodiversity.

Third observation

The topic of gender conversion therapy in Islam mainly relates to these key objectives in maqasid shariah including protection of Life (Hifz al-Nafs) which ensuring both physical and mental health is important. Islam supports treatments that help people, but they must follow Islamic teachings. Next, Protection of Religion (Hifz al-Din) which in Islam has clear roles for men and women. Changing gender could conflict with these roles, so the religion generally discourages it unless in very special cases.
