Welcome back to another week of sustain your lyfe👍
Today's topic is Islam and Sustainable Development
There are three important subtopics:
1. Islam and Social Sustainability
2. Islam and Environmental Sustainability
3. Islam and Economic Sustainability
Social Sustainability in Islam
The concept of Khilafah (vicegerency) emphasizes humanity's role as stewards of Earth. Islamic social governance is built on principles such as:
- Shura (Consultation)
- Amanah (Trustworthiness)
- Ukhuwwah (Islamic Brotherhood)
The five pillars of Islam (Shahadah, Salat, Zakat, Sawm, and Hajj) and the tenets of Iman guide Muslims in establishing a just and equitable society. These principles ensure that social sustainability is rooted in faith, charity, and accountability.
Environmental Sustainability in Islam
1. Core Principles
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) proclaimed, "There shall be no damage and no infliction of damage," setting a foundational principle for environmental stewardship. Natural resources, including water, air, and soil, are communal assets meant to serve humanity's needs without exploitation or harm.
2. Waste Management
Islam prohibits excessiveness and waste, as emphasized in Qur'anic verses like:
- "Eat and drink, but waste not by excess; for He loves not the excessive" (Al-A'raf 7:31).
3. Water Conservation
Water holds a sacred role in Islam, not just for survival but also for spiritual purification. Prophet Muhammad advised: "Do not waste water, even if you are on a running river."
4. Sustainable Forestry
The preservation of trees is considered a charitable act:
- "Whoever plants a tree and looks after it until it matures will be rewarded in the Hereafter."
Economic Sustainability in Islam
Islamic economics focuses on equity and redistribution of wealth, discouraging practices like usury (Riba) and promoting charity through:
- Zakat and Sadaqah (Mandatory and voluntary almsgiving)
- Waqf (Charitable endowments)
- Takaful (Islamic insurance)
The Qur'an emphasizes responsible use of resources:
- "Do not neglect your share from this world, and do good as Allah did good to you. Do not seek to cause corruption on Earth" (Al-Qasas 28:77).
